The Benefits of Yoga

I never used to be a massive fan of yoga. I was always, ‘If I’m not dripping with sweat and aching all over by the end of this session, then what’s the point?’. Over the past few years I’ve dabbled with downward dog at more London yoga studios than you can shake a stick at but I’d always get too bored or too hot or told off for getting the giggles. But for some reason there was something about yoga that always kept me coming back for more.

So when 2015 arrived, my New Year’s Resolution was to do yoga at least once a week. Somehow – after 27 years of  failing to make it past January 5th without being defeated – I managed to stick to my word (well, up until September) and have since found a new love and appreciation for the discipline.

And much of that is thanks to finally discovering the best yoga studio I’ve been to. Yogarise Peckham was set up by Peckham locals – husband and wife, Emma and Sean at the Bussey Building by Peckham Rye station. They offer a variety of classes taught by some incredible teachers. There is a practice for literally everyone, from mum and baby yoga to the classic Ashtanga and Rocket – which, just FYI, will definitely leave you dripping with sweat and aching all over. In a good way.

It’s a completely chilled out environment where there is no judgement – and you can take my word for that because while I’m struggling to forward bend further than 90 degrees and the person next to me is in a headstand while doing the splits and spinning plates with their feet (ok, slight exaggeration but you get the gist), I never feel self conscious. Because it’s not about touching your toes, it’s about what you learn on the way down.
